What was your first
introduction to high fashion?
My first introduction and
appreciation to high fashion was through one of my best friends, Amber. Her
lifestyle and taste inspired me. She actually has her own brand right now, and
I couldn't be prouder! Her line is called Elle Est Grece (@elleestgrece on IG)
and it's the perfect Grecian chic.
What do you think of youth
culture being the most powerful vehicle by which to market fashion to
consumers?
In my opinion, the youth is
only inspiring the youth. The youth who follow the explore page, that is. The
youth who know what they want to do, know what they like, have done their
homework are the hamsters that keep running and keep the hamster wheel of fashion
going. That probably doesn't sound charming, but it's the truth that we're all
victims of consumerism, whether it's just for pleasure (explore page youth who
do it for the likes) or business (hamsters who do it for a passion and cause).
Do you believe that advertising
conveys a sense of prestige through its imitation of art and reference to
nostalgia, but also by its play on age-old fantasies like youth, happiness, and
beauty?
Advertising is the integral
cog you find in every industry! Not everyone is aware of that, or wants to
accept it but it's the psychology of business.
Do you believe that advertising offers beauty as a consumer good
in a sense?
The advertising of skincare
and beauty lines have been ever changing over the years. Glossier really
changed the game since their birth in 2014.
In your day to day, do you feel like you're continually reinventing
yourself through your clothing choices?
My day-to-day attires are solely based on my mood and work
schedule. As the visual merchandiser at Kith Miami, I have to be comfortable
with a lot of heavy, physical work, so I always keep it casual in my sneakers
and Kith apparel. On the weekends at work I play around with my outfits, since
it's the only time I get to sell and work with clients. I always try to wear my
outfits in different ways, I truly hate repeating outfits although it's
inevitable at times.
In your experience as a stylist, do you think that the
perception of conventional beauty is gradually evolving?
Conventional beauty was never a
thing to me. I grew up as the only Colombian girl in all my schools - I was
tan, thick thighs, dark eyebrows. I'm happy that the social norm is changing,
people are more accepting of "unconventional beauty" instead of being
scared of a different look.
